Slow Down, Breathe Deep


Breathing is the cornerstone of diving. The slower and more controlled your breathing, the less gas you’ll use. Think of it like hiking up a mountain—if you’re panting and gulping air, you’re going to tire out quickly. The same applies underwater.


One trick we recommend to our divers is the “4-4-4-4” technique: inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, and pause for four counts before inhaling again. Practicing this rhythm not only conserves gas but also helps calm your nerves, especially during exciting moments, like when you spot a white tip reef shark for the first time.

  • Here’s a personal tip: On a recent dive at Catalinas Islands, one of our guides paused near a cleaning station, barely moving. Within minutes, a massive manta ray approached and hovered just above him. The rest of the group—who were swimming in circles—missed the moment. Stay calm, and let the ocean reveal its wonders.

The Goldilocks Principle of Weighting


Getting your weighting just right is like finding the perfect balance. Too much weight, and you’ll sink like a stone, using more gas to stay afloat. Too little, and you’ll fight to stay submerged, constantly fiddling with your BCD. Neither is efficient.


Before your dive, take a few minutes to perform a buoyancy check. When you’re neutrally buoyant at the surface with an empty BCD and holding a normal breath, you should float at eye level. Adjust your weights accordingly, and remember, the right weighting changes depending on your gear and wetsuit thickness.


Hover Like a Pro


Neutral buoyancy is the ultimate game-changer. Once you’re neutrally buoyant, you can hover effortlessly, reducing movement and conserving energy and gas. A great exercise is to practice hovering a few feet above the seabed without kicking or using your hands. You’ll be amazed at how much gas you save.

Trim refers to your body’s position in the water. Ideally, you should be perfectly horizontal, like an arrow slicing through the water. This reduces drag, making you more efficient and less likely to tire out.

The easiest way to improve your trim is by adjusting your gear placement. If your legs are sinking, try moving some weights to your tank straps or using ankle weights. Keep your arms extended in front and your head up. A balanced, streamlined position lets you glide effortlessly through the water—and look like a pro while doing it.

On a dive at Murciélago Islands, one of our divers struggled to keep up with the group. After adjusting her trim, she was suddenly keeping pace with ease, using significantly less gas. Sometimes, small tweaks make a world of difference.

For tighter spaces or when you need a bit more speed, the modified flutter kick is your best friend. Avoid wide, scissor-like kicks that waste energy and gas. And whatever you do, keep your hands still—waving them around is a surefire way to burn through your tank.
